One of the most popular gold bars is the 5 gram bar with a fineness of 999.9. With its weight, which is very close to that of the 20 franc gold Vreneli, which weighs 5.8 grams, it has become a real competitor to the bar. This is because coins are often more expensive than bars anyway and banks in particular charge a particularly high premium on the gold Vreneli.
Another advantage is that many manufacturers produce this bar in this purity grade of 999.9 and offer it with special security features and even as a fair-trade version.
Who produces 5 gram bars
In Switzerland there are the following refineries that produce 5 gram gold bars:
Argor-Heraeus
Metalor
Pamp
Valcambi
Px Precinox
These refineries also produce the bars, which are then sold by various banks under their own brand. The bars of the ZKB, for example, come from Argor-Heraeus.
How are 5 gram bars produced?
After refining raw gold or recycled gold to a fineness of 999.9, long gold strips are made from it. From these gold strips, 5 gram plates are punched out which are then stamped with the necessary embossing.
In contrast to larger bars, these small bars are not cast.
The purity of 5 gram bars
The refineries in Switzerland today actually only produce 999.9 gold bars. Even a purity of 999 is still often found on the market. The fineness 999.5 is rather exotic, but it is very common for platinum.
995 is the lowest purity that just meets the LBMA's Good Delivery Standard. In addition, the purity of 995 is the lowest purity for bars that is still exempt from VAT under the Federal VAT Ordinance. Bars with a fineness lower than 995 are subject to VAT.
What security features are there?
Usually the 5 gram bars are sold sealed in plastic, so-called blisters. These blisters also contain the certificate. When buying precious metals, you should generally make sure that the blisters are sealed and that the certificates are still present.
Argor-Heraeus produces a special bar, the so-called Kinebar, which is a bar with a full-surface laser engraving on the back that is supposed to make the bar particularly forgery-proof.
The price of 5 gram gold bars
Of course, the price of 5 gram gold bars is also based on the gold price on the stock exchange. Since the production steps and for a punched hundred gram bar are the same as for a five gram bar, the price premium is of course proportionally higher. Nevertheless, the 5 gram bar is an attractive size because it is already five times larger than the one gram bar. This makes it a good gift for birthdays, christenings, weddings or even as a small emergency reserve.
