With 100 grams of fine gold, this bar is one of the most popular bars among private investors, if not the most popular bar at all. The 100 gram gold bar is produced both cast and stamped.

Many manufacturers have these bars of 100 grams weight and a purity of 999.9 in their assortment. Some refineries also produce bars with special security features in addition to the normal bars, and fair trade versions are also offered. Wide choice for the consumer often leads to better prices than with special sizes, which are only offered by a few manufacturers.

Who makes 100 gram bars

Every manufacturer of investment bars will also carry 100 gram gold bars in their assortment, in the Swiss Confederation the following refineries are certainly the most important:

• Argor-Heraeus

• Metalor

• Pamp

• Px Precinox

• Valcambi

When banks sell gold bars under their own logo, they are made by the refineries mentioned above. The bars of the Zürcher Kantonalbank, for example, come from Argor-Heraeus.

How are 100 gram bars produced?

As mentioned in the introduction, there are two production processes: stamping and casting. In both processes, gold is first refined to the desired fineness. Then the ingot is produced.

In the casting process, exactly 100 g of gold granulate are melted and then cooled in a mould. It makes no difference whether the gold is poured from a crucible into a mould in a heated state or whether the mould itself is heated with the granulate. In any case, the result is an ingot that has the pattern on the upper side that is typical for this manufacturing process.

In the stamping process, first an ingot or strand is formed into a long gold strip, which is already very close to the future ingot in terms of both width and thickness. In a further step, 100 gram gold plates are punched out of this gold strip, which are then embossed with the product and manufacturer information.

On the European and especially the Swiss market, punched 100 gram gold bars are more common today.

The purity of 100 gram gold bars

Nowadays, almost only investment gold bars with a purity of 999.9 are produced in Switzerland. In older bars, the finenesses of 999 and 995 can be found from time to time. The fineness 999.5, which is more commonly associated with platinum, is unusual for gold, but possible.

The lowest fineness that just meets the Good Delivery Standard defined by the LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) is 995, which is probably one of the reasons why the fineness of 995 in bars is the lowest fineness still exempted from VAT by the Federal VAT Ordinance. Bars with a purity lower than 995 are subject to VAT.

What are the security features of 100 g gold bars?

100 gram bars are usually sold sealed in plastic, so-called blisters. The certificate is also included in these blisters. When buying precious metals, the customer should make sure that the blisters are sealed and the certificates are still present.

Kine bars are special bars from Argor-Heraeus which are decorated on the whole backside with a laser engraving, which also serves as protection against counterfeiting.

The price of 100 gram gold bars

The price of 100 gram gold bars is derived from the gold price on the stock exchange. Since the production costs for a 100 gram bar are largely identical to those of a larger bar, they have to be passed on to a smaller turnover. This results in a larger spread between the buying and selling price. Nevertheless, the spread for 100 gram bars is much more attractive than for smaller bars. This makes it very popular with private investors.

It is occasionally claimed that a cast bar is cheaper than a stamped bar because of the lower manufacturing costs. This statement should be taken with a grain of salt because it is not always true.
