Due to its weight of 20 grams, this bar is more attractive than its smaller brothers, because the premium on the gold price is much lower.
The bars with a weight of 20 grams are produced by many manufacturers in the purity grade of 999.9. Some of them have special security features or are offered as fair-trade versions. This large selection leads to rather smaller spreads.
Who makes 20 gram bars
Worldwide 20 gram bars are produced by countless refineries, in Switzerland there are the following refineries that produce this gold bar:
Argor-Heraeus
Metalor
Pamp
Valcambi
Px Precinox
The bars which are offered by various banks under their own brand are also produced by these refineries. The bars of the Zürcher Kantonalbank, for example, are made by Argor-Heraeus.
How are 20 gram bars produced?
After refining raw gold or recycled gold to a fineness of 999.9, long gold strips are made from it. These gold strips are then punched into 20-gramme plates, which are stamped with the product and manufacturer information in the next process step.
Small bars like this 20 gram bar are not cast like larger gold bars.
The purity of 20 gram bars
Nowadays, gold bars are almost exclusively produced in Switzerland in the fineness of 999.9. The purities of 999 and 995 are still regularly found on the market for older bars. The fineness 999.5, which is typical for platinum, is rather special for gold.
The lowest purity that just meets the Good Delivery Standard of the LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) is 995, which is probably why the fineness of 995 is the lowest purity for bars that is still exempt from VAT under the Federal VAT Ordinance. All bars with a fineness lower than 995 are subject to VAT.
What are the security features
20 gram bars are usually sold sealed in plastic, so-called blisters. The certificate is also included in these blisters. When buying precious metals, the customer should make sure that the blisters are sealed and that the certificates are still present.
To protect against counterfeiters, Argor-Heraeus produces a special bar, the so-called Kinebar. This bar is decorated with a laser engraving on the entire back, which is very decorative, but also serves as protection against counterfeiting.
The price of 20 gram gold bars
The price of the 20 gram gold bar is also based on the gold price on the stock exchange. The production steps for a stamped 20 gram bar are the same as for a 100 gram bar, which is why the difference between the sale and purchase price of the smaller bar is greater than that of the larger bar. However, since the 20 gram bar already has a substantial value, the production premium is not as significant as with the smaller bars. This is a bar that can be easily resold due to its low value compared to the larger bars.
